Frenectomy in Scarborough

Eastside Family Dentistry

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a dental procedure that removes the frenum, a small fold of connective tissue in the mouth that links the gums and lips to the teeth. The main types of frena in the mouth include:

  • Labial Frenum: Connects the inner part of the upper or lower lip to the gums.
  • Lingual Frenum: Connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
  • Buccal Frenum: Connects the inside of the cheek to the gums.

When these tissues extend too far into the mouth, they can hinder normal oral functions such as speaking or eating. In some instances, an extended frenulum can lead to misalignment of teeth or gum recession.

Frenectomy Procedure

The frenectomy procedure involves cutting the frenum using either a scalpel or a laser. If necessary, the area is then sutured. In our office, we use the Solea dental laser, which offers several benefits:

  • Minimal bleeding
  • No need for sutures
  • Fast healing

Frenectomy Post-Procedure Care

After the procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort or swelling. These symptoms can be managed with:

  • Pain medication
  • Ice packs
  • Most patients can resume their normal activities within a day.

Benefits of a Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a safe and effective procedure that can provide significant relief from oral discomfort and improve overall dental function. It is important to consult a dental professional to determine if you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

A frenectomy procedure is painless during treatment thanks to local anesthesia, though you may experience mild discomfort and swelling afterward. Most patients manage any post-procedure soreness with over-the-counter pain medication. Call your dentist if you experience severe pain, bleeding, or persistent swallowing difficulties.

Most of the time, we, at Eastside Family Dentistry, use a topical gel instead of anesthesia because the Solea laser enables a smoother and less painful procedure.

A frenectomy is a quick and simple procedure that takes place in a dentist’s office under local anesthesia.

A laser frenectomy typically offers a quicker and more comfortable recovery compared to traditional methods. The healing process usually takes about a week, with most healing occurring in the first few days.

Key healing points:

  • Minimized discomfort due to laser precision
  • Faster healing compared to traditional methods
  • Less or no bleeding during and after procedure
  • Lower infection risk since laser sterilizes the area

Keep the area clean and follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions during recovery. Contact your provider if you experience persistent pain or bleeding.

A frenectomy can be performed in two main ways:

Traditional Method:

  • Area is numbed and tissue is released using sterile scissors or scalpel
  • Takes about 1-2 minutes
  • May require stitches

Laser Method:

  • More precise with less or no bleeding
  • Minimizes infection risk
  • Faster healing time

The entire procedure typically takes 15 minutes or less and is performed in a dental office under local anesthesia or topical anesthetic gel.
