About Dr. Jan
Education, Training, and (CDE)
I graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the Armenian Medical Institute, earning my D.D.S. degree in 2004. Following that, I completed a two-year residency at the National Institute of Health in Armenia, finishing in 2006. Shortly after, I began my dental career in private practice in Yerevan, Armenia.
Upon relocating to Canada, I continued my dental education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, an esteemed Ivy League institution, where I earned my degree with honors. I also completed specialized programs in Pain Management and Dental Radiological Sciences.
Dentistry is a constantly evolving field, and staying current with new advancements is something I am deeply passionate about. To further enhance my expertise, I pursued additional qualifications in various areas, including Implantology, clear aligners (such as Invisilign and SureSmile) treatment, dental Botox, and more.
I have been practicing for over 11 years and I love all aspects of dentistry, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how I can transform people’s lives. I have a particular passion for the surgical field—extractions, implants, and bone grafting give me a uniquely fulfilling experience. Also, crowns and bridges are among my favorite procedures to perform.
Guiding principles
My guiding principle is simple: “Do no harm, do your best, and when you know better, do better.” I always follow a personal rule—would I provide the same level of care if the person in the chair were a family member? If the answer isn’t a resounding yes, then it’s not good enough. I also believe in understanding my limitations; when in doubt, I don’t hesitate to refer a patient to a specialist with greater expertise in a particular case.
What inspired me to become a dentist?
I got my first glimpse into the world of medicine through my parents. Both of them were passionate doctors, deeply committed to their work. Conversations at home often revolved around their patients, intriguing clinical cases they encountered, challenging scenarios, unexpected developments in a disease’s progression, and how they navigated those situations. I found myself drawn to the problem-solving aspect of being a physician. From an early age, I was also fascinated by the human body and how it functions. I would often leaf through medical books scattered around the house, asking questions about various organs and their roles. Given my upbringing, pursuing a career in medicine felt like a natural path. Though there were no dentists in my family, among all the health professions, I chose dentistry as my calling.
In my younger years, when people asked why I wanted to become a dentist, my answer was simple: “I just love beautiful smiles.” Over time, after ten years of study and working as a general dentist in both Armenia and Canada, I came to understand that dentistry is about far more than aesthetics. It encompasses a wide range of critical health concerns: TMJ disorders, periodontal disease and its connection to overall health, oral pathologies—including potentially life-threatening conditions like oral cancer—airway obstructions in cases of sleep apnea, and more.
During my teenage years, I started noticing asymmetry in my face—my midline was off-center, and my bite was misaligned. The disheartening part was that I had already completed orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics, as a specialty, was just beginning to develop in Armenia, and despite my parents taking me to the best specialist they could find, the outcome left me feeling insecure. At that time, all I knew was that I never wanted a patient of mine to experience the same dissatisfaction. If faced with uncertainty, I would always seek out or refer to someone with greater expertise in such cases.
What makes your dentistry different from others in the area?
Beyond putting my heart and soul into every procedure and doing my absolute best for every patient, I also take pride in utilizing cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line equipment to deliver the highest quality care. Working daily with the Solea CO2 laser is something that truly sets me apart—there are only five of us in the entire GTA who own and operate this advanced tool.
I take great pride in my dedication to providing the best for my patients, and it’s something I’m not shy about sharing.
I believe my unwavering cheerfulness and warm nature plays a big role in making my patients feel comfortable in the dental chair (which is not the most pleasant place to be in lol).
